In some indigenous cultures, water bugs, especially dragonflies and water striders, hold spiritual significance, symbolizing purity, swiftness, happiness, transformation, healing and the importance of water.  

This particular hand crafted water bug was made by Eric Iron Star (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe).  He utilized a combination of leather and colorful beads to create the design.
