Tim Lammers
Oglala Lakota Nation
Tim Lammers is an Oglala Lakota Sioux who was born September 4, 1957, at Mountain Home, Idaho. Tim attended Millard and Williamson public schools in Fremont, California, graduating in 1975. He completed one year of Commercial Art at the Oakland Art Institute, Oakland, California 1978.
As a self taught quill worker, Tim began to do quillwork as a way of preserving an art form that has long been a significant part of his Lakota heritage. Quillwork produced by Tim is fashioned after the traditional techniques, as it’s use was more prevalent before the advent of glass beads in America. In producing quillwork, quills are presorted, cleaned and dyed prior to applications. Using the historical colors of red, yellow, black and white, Tim recreates geometric designs and realistic figures on brain tanned hides. Some of the items produced include bladder bags, war shirts, knife sheaths, moccasins and blanket strips. He also uses the wrapping and plaiting techniques for fringes, medicine wheels, arm bands, hair ties, fan handles, pipe stems and pipe tampers.
In addition to his exceptional quillwork, Tim creates other historical Lakota art and crafts with glass beads. he creates beadwork of all types for headdresses, lances, bow and arrow sets, children’s games and much more.
