Native American artist J.J. Little Wounded, Mnicoujou Lakota Nation, uses a box turtle shell to create this hand rattle. He adorns the rattle with a small fluff, glass beads and a leather covered wooden handle.

Rattles are sometimes used to help focus prayers, or send away bad energies or even to attract good energies, it all depends on what your culture teaches you.
