Our goal at the Sioux Trading Post is simple: we want to provide customers with exceptional Native American craft supplies.

Since our beginning in 1957, we have built a formidable reputation for excellence, both in providing craft supplies and collecting Native American art. We have lived among and worked with our many friends in Indian Country. We have listened to their stories and learned their cultural traditions. We understand the importance of procuring only the highest quality craft supplies for them and their artwork.

Today, we showcase a unique medley of traditional craft supplies, Native American herbs, and animal hides, as well as one of the largest collections of Italian glass beads in the world.

History 1957: American Indian art enthusiast and scholar Dennis Lessard and his wife Rosemary begin the Sioux Trading Post in Detroit, Michigan. 1963: Dennis and Rosemary move the business to the Rosebud Reservation in Mission, South Dakota. 1986: Sioux Trading Post is sold to ardent collectors and patrons of Native American art, Ken and Kathy Vogele from Rapid City, South Dakota. 1988: Kathy becomes a certified appraiser of antique Native American art and is a Northern Plains Tribal Arts show board member where she advocates raising awareness and providing a venue for Lakota Indian artists in the Central and Northern Plains. 1990: With the encouragement of Lakota artist and elder, Emma Amiotte, the Vogele’s expand to a second location in Rapid City. 1992: Soon to be sister store, Prairie Edge, purchases a remaining stock of beads from the Societa Veneziana de Conterie from Murano, Italy. 1993: Sioux Trading Post is purchased by the Hillenbrand family, who continue to uphold the Post’s strong commitment to quality products and preserving the Native American tribal culture. 1993: The Sioux Trading Post becomes home to one of the largest collections of Italian glass beads in the world. 1995: The Hillenbrand family further expands Sioux Trading to include their original location on the Rosebud Reservation, 2 stores in Rapid City, and 1 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 2005: Sioux Trading merges the 4 stores into their current location in Rapid City, South Dakota.
