This magnificent example of quillwork incorporates all the elements of historical pieces. The soft leather mask is embellished with beautiful quillwork. Quillwork is an ancient art form and is extremely labor intensive.
Our young artist, Caroline Ravenshead (Oglala Lakota), is carrying on the traditions handed down from one generation to another. She uses dyed porcupine quills and attaches them to smoked tanned deer hide. She adds glass beadwork around the eye holes and along the edge of the mask, long satin ribbon on each of the four corners, metal bells and two leather ties to help secure the mask on the horse.
