Native American Hand Beaded Aqua Cradleboard: Holy Bear
This beautifully hand beaded cradleboard features the bear, a Holy Bear, to protect the child and help guide them into adulthood. Oglala Lakota artist Kevin Fast Horse, Sr., used hand cut glass Italian beads to create this special piece.
Kevin says, “The beadwork pattern, four paw prints at the top of the cradle and a bear with a life line going through the center of it, is the Holy Bear. The geometric pattern represents the Great Lakota Nation.”
Kevin attaches his beadwork to commercially tanned deer hides, he finishes the cradle section with glass and metal beads, small metal bells, and buffalo nickels.
The cradle is attached to a board back that is stained and then decorated with metal tacks. Kevin attaches a single hand beaded turtle amulet that will keep the baby’s umbilical cord safe.
The piece is signed by the artist.
