Prairie Edge
South Dakota: Yesterday & Today
In a project spanning more than ten years, Paul Horsted found the location of 350 intriguing and sometimes one-of-a-kind historic photos across South Dakota, establishing the original photographer’s camera location in each case to create the matching photo pairs that fill the pages of this book. The images of past and present reveal how much daily life has changed over the decades; how towns and cities have grown or declined or even been rejuvenated; and how the environment has often been transformed across this infinitely varied landscape. Many of the photos also involve interesting and enjoyable stories about the people of our state.
This walk through time embraces all areas, from the Black Hills to the Badlands and West River plains, and from the Missouri River to the the East River farmlands. The smallest towns and the largest cities are represented in the images that bring to life the ever-evolving story of South Dakota.
