The Nakoda language—also known as Assiniboine, an Ojibwe ethnonym meaning “Stone Enemy”—is an endangered Siouan language of the Mississippi Valley branch spoken in southern Saskatchewan and northern Montana. Nakoda belongs to the Dakotan dialectal continuum, which includes Dakota, Lakota, and Stoney.

The fieldwork for this project was done between 2018 and 2020 with Elder Wilma Kennedy, one of the last fluent speakers living in Carry The Kettle, Saskatchewan. The volume brings together many valuable stories and colorful expressions as well as archaic words that do not appear in any known sources of the language. Particular care was taken to obtain the derivatives of many verbal stems, along with sentences for many of the verbs, adverbs, and other function words.

More than a list of words, this volume contains definitions and standard spellings along with a wealth of grammatical information. Drawing on archival sources and her own extensive work in the community, Mindy J. Morgan investigates how historical understandings of literacy practices challenge current Indigenous language revitalization efforts on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana.

Created in 1887, Fort Belknap is home to the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine peoples. The history of these two peoples over the past century is a common one among Indigenous groups, with religious and federal authorities aggressively promoting the use of English at the expense of the local Indigenous languages. Morgan suggests that such efforts at the assimilation of Indigenous peoples had a far-reaching and not fully appreciated consequence. Through a close reading of federal, local, and missionary records at Fort Belknap, Morgan demonstrates how the government used documents as a means of restructuring political and social life as well as regulating access to resources during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As a result, the residents of Fort Belknap began to use written English as a means of negotiating with the government and when arguing for structural change during the early reservation period while maintaining distinct arenas for Indigenous language use. These linguistic practices have significantly shaped the community’s perceptions of the utility of writing and continue to play a central role in contemporary language programs that increasingly rely on standardized orthographies for Indigenous language programs.

B17,MORGAN-the-bearer-of-this-letter-language-ideologies-literacy-practices-and-the-fort-belknap-indian-community
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0625/9756/2453/files/Indigenous-Education-The-Bearer-of-This-Letter-Language-Ideologies-Literacy-Practices-and-the-Fort-Belknap-Indian-Community-Hardcover_c619a40f-ecac-4f1e-9b06-95fe29807936_1.b2d9c112bc.jpg?v=1770215390
remembering-my-ancestors-lakota-narratives
Remembering My Ancestors: Lakota Narratives

This is a book like no other. Told in precision and eloquence by a master rememberer and story teller, Remembering My Ancestors will help preserve and carry forward Lakota as a living language beyond our lifetimes. It is the flowering of the Lakota way whose roots were so carefully planted by Rick Two Dogs, parents, and grandparents. The stories told within this book in the Lakota language ranges across time from Pine Ridge memories to the coming of the sacred pipe, a defining moment of the Lakota identity.

Book Details: paperback, 86 pages, 2025

Author: Rick Two Dogs (Lakota)
