Description

Jacquie Red Feather is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind in shame. Dene Oxendene is pulling his life back together after his uncle’s death and has come to work at the powwow to honor his uncle’s memory. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil, who has taught himself traditional Indian dance through YouTube videos and will to perform in public for the very first time. There will be glorious communion, and a spectacle of sacred tradition and pageantry. And there will be sacrifice, and heroism, and loss.

As we learn the reasons that each person is attending the Big Oakland Powwow—some generous, some fearful, some joyful, some violent—momentum builds toward a shocking yet inevitable conclusion that changes everything.

Review by Brittany:
Like the silken strands of a spider’s web – stories grow, and converge, bringing people and experiences together in the most unlikely of ways. Is it a small world or just coincidence? Tommy Orange’s book THERE THERE is just that. It’s an intricate weaving of different stories of twelve different individuals with different backgrounds that come together to mesh into one great, big collective story of urban American Indians who all have their own reasons for going to the Big Oakland Powwow.  Unknowingly to these characters – no matter their past, present, or their ever evolving lives, they still reach the undeniable end of a commonality that depicts Indian country where everyone is connected in fate’s grand design.  Moreover, Orange’s book is truly a page turner filled with multi-generational accounts of violence, recovery, memory, identity, beauty, and even a little despair. It’s a book where you as the reader can’t put down until you finish it with both a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of anticipation of what could happen next.

Book

Very heartwarming yet sad story. It tells a story of how things connect in life; how experiences in your youth can come full circle to your adult life. Highly recommended!
