“Sacred Instructions” is a very interesting book on living based on spiritual living based on awareness and change. The teaches included in this particular piece of literature are from the insight and wisdom of the author’s own Penawahpskek ekders of the Penobscot Nation in the various waterways of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. The author emphasizes that we as human beings are living in a virtual and overall materialistic world. We have forgotten our connection to the earth and our potential to be our better selves. To achieve our full potential, the author shares that to make a meaningful impression on the world we must access our individual gifts and manifest them into the world collectively. In addition, we must tune into our ability to see beyond the mere physical reality of our world that surrounds us, blinds us, and consumes us. We must awaken our senses to the vast unseen world that exists within our Mother Earth and only then will we be able to see beyond sight and hear beyond sound.
What I also enjoyed about Mitchell’s book was that it showed how oral traditions create the foundations of our very existence because indigenous people have always realized that our words have the power to create. In other words, oral traditions form words and those words are capable of creating form which then in turn brings forth the world in which we can experience with all our senses. It’s tangible. On top of that, it is also the transcendence of our differences as a people and the weaving of our diverse skills, ideas, and traditions into a tapestry that’s harmonized and aligned with a common purpose. It’s the knowledge that everything is interconnected and shares a kinship with the earth and all its wonders.
