Of all aspects of Lakota culture, there is none more important than kinship terms. In Lakota the word Wowahecun (WOH wah hay choohn) means kinship terms. It is through these terms that Lakotas come to know, remember and respect those that come before them and those who follow.
Througout our many years of living with Lakota people, no subject creates more concern among elderly Lakotas than losing these terms, the very significance of which is imbodied in the expression Mitakya Oyasin ~ All my Relations.
