Native American Quilled Pipebag on Tanned Deer Hide
Created by Native American or Oglala Lakota artist Don Giago, it is the real deal right down to the tanned hide by Don and the beautifully dyed porcupine quills.
Don has a real talent, the design is an elaborate four directions but he has also added a nice blending of turquoise, dark blue, yellow and white dyed porcupine quills. Quillwork predates beadwork, it is an ancient art form that the Northern Plains Native Americans are known for. Before porcupine quills, the Plains Indians used bird feather quills but as the birds began to disappear they changed to porcupine quills.
