Native American artist Evans Flammond, Sr. creates this depiction of the Lakota fighting off the U.S. Cavalry. There are times when you are the victor and times when you have to retreat.
Evans starts with a commercially tanned elk hide with hair on. He paints the images with acrylic paints. The cavalry are painted in blue uniforms on brown horses and the Lakota ride horses of many different colors. The warriors are all dressed in different styles of war attire. Evans fills the robe with images of horse hoof prints, three dot clusters, stylized four direction symbols, bear paws and buffalo tracks. The Seven Council Fires or Oceti Sakowin are represented as well. The piece is signed by the artist.
