Description

A bold rendering of a Lakota buffalo hunter, artist Donald F. Montileaux depicts an interesting hunting technique in, "Buffalo Staff Bearer." Drawn in colored pencil and ink on an antique, 1897 Justice's Docket, the dynamic image shows the Native American man on horseback holding up a staff with feathers on the end of it. In the hunt, while running alongside the buffaloes, he would use the feather staff to disorient and distract the enormous animals by waving it near their eyes.

The drawing really stands out against the chosen mat colors. Conservation materials and UV glass were used to frame the piece.
