Description
Ella C. Deloria (author) was a Native speaker of Lakota and Dakota who made an invaluable and groundbreaking contribution to the documentation of the language and culture. Trained by Franz Boas at Columbia University, she became one of the first Native students of linguistics and ethnography in North America. Lakota Stories contains 64 traditional narratives that she collected from Lakota speakers and originally published in 1932, creating the most reliably transcribed body of Lakota text to date. The present monolingual edition foregrounds and accentuates the original Lakota version of the stories and presents them in a modern orthography that is in accord with the linguistic approach that informed Deloria's transcription.
