Original Ledger Art: Watch for Their White Eyes
This large-scale ledger drawing was created by Lakota ledger artist, Donald F. Montileaux on two full sheets of antique ledger paper still attached at the seam. The paper is dated 1906 and happens to have been a ledger from a general store. The stylized artwork is rendered in colored pencil and ink and depicts a Native American man on horseback racing alongside the thundering bison as he attempts to get close enough and in just the right position to take one. The size of the piece is striking and the image is full of excitement. The framing further enhances the image, including mats and glass of conservation grade to protect the art.
