October, 2011

The month of October is known as Waniyetu Wi in Lakota, which means Winter Moon. The thought of winter already at our doorstep reminds us we will soon be hibernating for the cold months ahead, but it also makes us appreciate our October's busy start with all it's excitement, spectacular events, and fantastic opportunities!

Lakota Beadwork artist Kevin Fast Horse

Studio Visit with Artist Kevin Fast Horse
We recently took a trip to beadwork artist Kevin Fast Horse's home studio - we hung out, watched him work, had some great coffee, and just talked and got to know the person behind the art.

We had an amazing time and ended up with TONS of great footage...but, it was way too much for one tiny video, so we've decided to dedicate the month of October to sharing video snippets of our visit with him.

Books by Joseph M. Marshall III

In early October, we celebrated the literary arts at the 9th annual South Dakota Festival of Books. This year, the Festival's focus was on works with an American Indian cultural theme and we had the great opportunity to spend some time with this year's One Book South Dakota author Joseph Marshall III and learn more about his most recent book, The Journey of Crazy Horse.

How to Light a Sweetgrass Braid for Smudging

How to Light a Sweetgrass Braid for Smudging

Last month, we announced the arrival of our new sweetgrass harvest. It led to a lot of excitement, and a few inquiries about how to properly light this sweet smelling herb for smudging, so this month, Michael from our Sioux Trading Post shows us how!

Black Hills Pow Wow
During the first weekend in October, we also geared up for the 25th Annual He Sapa Wacipi (Black Hills Pow Wow). This year's theme was "Empowering Our Youth" - it was a truly inspiring event and was an amazing display of the beautiful song and dance of the Plains Indian culture. This event always marks the end of the Pow Wow season, but luckily, we have a whole winter to catch up and get ready for next year's Trail!
