Mary B. Hunt - Gering, Nebraska

“I was born and raised on a farm in northwestern Minnesota where I became interested in all manner of birds and wildlife, frequently having the opportunity to see them in their natural environments.  May earliest recollection of producing drawings was at the age of five and from then on I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life creating art.

"I took art classes throughout high school and then at a vocational school, Moorhead Area Vocational Technical Institute.  The decision to pursue commercial art was mostly to satisfy my parents who did not feel it was possible to make a living as an artist.  After a year at Moorhead I felt I needed to make a change.  I decided to attend St. Cloud State University and study art.  A vacation to Colorado several years later influenced my decision to move west.

"After working for 12 years as a graphic artist I felt an overwhelming urge to see if I could make it as a fine art artist.  I had been producing several pieces every year with favorable results at shows and with sales.  Shortly thereafter I moved with my future husband to Nebraska.  I had been working mostly with pastels but by chance rediscovered ‘Gouache’ which proved to be a wonderful medium for producing paintings of wildlife which I was focusing on at the time.  As I painted more and more I found my attention being drawn to the birds in the area.  The Nebraska panhandle is one of the best birding areas in the nation since many of the eastern and western species overlap ranges.

"In 1997, I had the honor of having my art work chosen to appear on the 1998 Nebraska Habitat Stamp.  In six years of entering the competition I have been a finalist four additional times.

"After beginning a career in painting some years ago I have shown and won many competitions in the front range area of Colorado and Wyoming and have won many awards, both regionally and nationally.”
