Judy Thompson - Orange City, Iowa
Judy Thompson paints “the Heartland” of America, bringing a contemporary approach to her Midwest subjects. Vibrant colors, rich textures and bold contrasts bring beauty and excitement to her watercolor paintings.
Judy is an award winning artist who has exhibited her artwork nationally and regionally. Judy is a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor society, and an approved teaching artist for both the South Dakota and Nebraska Art Councils. Twice selected as Artist-in-Residence for the National Park Service, she has explored the prairie “up close and personal” at the Homestead National Monument and at Badlands National Park.
Transparent watercolor is the dominant medium used in Judy’s paintings. She often incorporates additional mediums, such as charcoal and India ink, to create unique textural effects. Another exciting technique Judy uses, is watercolor batik on Japanese paper. In this process, melted beeswax is alternated with watercolor washes. The areas painted with beeswax resist or repel the paint, leaving lighter areas. Applications of paint and wax are repeated until the entire painting is covered in beeswax. The paper is then crackled and one last watercolor wash is applied. The final step is to iron out the wax, revealing a delicate, translucent image.
When not painting or teaching, Judy enjoys hiking and biking with her husband through the fields and prairies which surround her home.
