Ramping up for Summer 2016!
March turned into April and the weather turned warmer. With a little luck and some much needed rain our Prairie and the Black Hills should look spectacular this year. Wild flowers are already popping open and the grass is turning green which means we need to get ready for our high season, summer. Before that all happens we also need to acknowledge the up-coming events.
From the Sioux Trading Post:
Our Sioux Trading Post Manager Nancy Witt and our General Manager Dan Tribby will be making the annual trip to Montana. Every year we visit our brothers and sisters at the Crow Reservation, and the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, April 21 - 23. If you are in the area and want to sell items to our buyers please feel free to contact us at 800-541-2388 before these dates, ask for Dan or Nancy to make arrangements. We are always interested in meeting local artists.
From the Native Gallery:
We are excited to see new items and Oglala Lakota beadwork artist Kevin Fast Horse, Sr. brought in something that is new for him. He hangs a beaded bear skull from the center of this wooden disc and then attaches beaded bear paw motifs around the skull. Kevin says this is a very contemporary version of a shield depicting the spirit of the bear and all it provided this very brave warrior.
He beads the piece with hand cut glass Italian beads, Kevin is a master with these old stock Italian glass beads.
From Prairie Edge Trading:
It's fun having a gift shop, with so many things out there that enhance our everyday lives and we get to carry a portion of them in our store. This year, Karisa and her crew have added new styles of tee shirts named "Earth Tees", they feature a Buffalo, Elk, Grizzly, Hawk or Wolf and the designs are by artist, Sue Coccia.
Sue Coccia is an award winning artist from Edmonds, Washington. At a young age, Sue had the love of animals instilled in her and was influenced by a high school art teacher. Sue hopes to inspire a love of animals with her pen and ink drawings.
We added an awesome assortment of jewelry from local and regional artists, hand crafted is always so special and thoughtful.
We have also added oil candles, now these beauties are filled with flowers, shells or fruit and are long burning in a clear glass container with a cotton wick, very special and a feature on our Instagram page.
If you're stuck on a gift idea for Mom (Mother's Day, May 8th) let us know what we can do to help, we can e-mail images or post them in a message from our Facebook page, we are here to help.
From the Book & Music Store:
Well the move downstairs has been a roaring success and this has also given the crew an opportunity to look over titles and introduce new books about old subjects.
This book, Custer's Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America by- T.J. Stiles is a recent addition (2015) from a Pulitzer Prize winning author. It is a deeper look into the personality of the man given the times he lived in. A must read for the history enthusiasts.
From the Fine Art Gallery:
Our Fine Art Gallery has this to say about one of the many artists they represent, "Bryan Bortnem is a self-taught artist living in Rutland, SD. He paints on approximately 130 year old paper that was salvaged from a house that was being torn down. The thick particle paper had acted as the only insulation in the walls. Using ink and acrylic paint on the torn paper, Bryan has developed his artistic style on this surface that is unique only to him."
Bryan has defined one-of-a-kind.
Next month we are excited for our Open House, May 7th from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. We are featuring in-house performances by Keaton Demoise (music and singing), artwork demonstrations by Dan Chapman, Del Iron Cloud, Jenny Braig and Sandy K. Designs. There will be snacks and enough time for a good visit so stop down and check out the changes and new inventory the gallery has to offer. While you're here make sure you register for 1 of 10 $100.00 gift cards being given away on this day! (You must register in-house).
Thank you for taking the time to catch-up with us and we'll be talking soon :)
